Canoe

It is early morning.
We are on a river in Alaska.
In the distance a moose is calling.
We are canoeing at sunrise, pleased with the early start.

Last night we fell asleep around the campfire.
We had spotted a black bear in the late afternoon and were a bit worried.

Usually bears will not attack humans.
A bear normally only attacks if it feels in danger or wishes to protect its territory.
However, if you come upon a bear, do not run.
If you start running the bear will chase you and bears can outrun people.
It is better to start talking to the bear.
When the bear hears you coming, it will probably leave.
Hopefully we will not get that close to a bear. It is safer to stay in the canoe.

We hope to spot other animals today.
Alaska is home to grizzly bears and polar bears, wolves, coyotes, rattlesnakes and elks.
