Pre-conference Workshop on "Computer games and Learning"

Pre-conference workshop

We have two slots of extra, free workshop sessions – on the afternoon before the PDW starts. This is an offer especially for those who arrive early.

“Games and Learning” (Ella Myhring, Højby School, and Claus Berg, UNI•C)

A mind provoking offer about a Danish approach on integrating video games in teaching.

Thursday 26 March 2009

14:00 - 15.00 Pre-conference Workshop, 1st round

15:10 - 16.10 The same workshop – 2nd round.

We hope many of you will take part in this offer of added European Value. This activity is also an offer within our participation in the Games in School project http://games.eun.org/

We’ll be using our weblog to document and discuss this as well. There’ll be a number of labtops available during the PDW where you can try some of the games, or just check your e-mail.

  • Computer Games is recognized by the European Commission as a cultural product!
  • Computer games are the students preferred leisure!
  • Computer Games interferes with other literary genres such as books, movies and comics!

Computer games should be part of their teaching, but is not.

Why?

  • Because computer games are not produced with the learning perspective?
  • Because computer games does not fit into the curriculum?
  • Because teachers do not know computer games?

The presentation argues for commercial computer games to be integrated into school teaching. It provides concrete examples of completed courses in which computer games:

  • Supports the educational and curricular goals
  • Provides students media skills
  • Becomes focus for analysis and production.
