Christmas Carols

King's College i Cambridge er berømt for sit kor, der bl.a. synger Christmas Carols.

En kollega bruger salmen O Come All Ye Faithful og bruger derefter de to danske oversættelser: 1. 'Kom, alle kristne' (som står i Den Danske Salmebog online,) og 2. 'Kom, tro, og kom, glæde' af Johannes Johansen (som også kan findes på nettet) til at diskutere oversættelse/gendigtning/anvendelse.

Terry Pratchett's Hogfather

  • Terry Pratchett's Hogfather is a two-part television adaptation of the book of the same name by Terry Pratchett, produced by The Mob, and first broadcast on Sky One, and in High Definition on Sky1 HD, over Christmas 2006.
  • Plot The series closely follows the plot of the novel, in which the Hogfather, the Discworld equivalent to Father Christmas, has gone missing, and Death is forced to take his place, while his granddaughter Susan attempts to find out what happened.
  • The Hogfather
  • The Discworld's version of Father Christmas or Santa Claus. He wears a red, fur-lined cloak, and rides a sleigh pulled by four wild boars (or, in modern portrayals, cute pink piggies), Gouger, Rooter, Tusker and Snouter. In earlier times he gave households pork products, and naughty children a bag of bloody bones. Earlier than that, he was a winter god of the death-and-renewal kind. The modern version is a jolly toymaker, with vestiges of the earlier myths (such as his Castle of Bones, a vast palace of ice which has nothing notably bony about it, except for the suggestion of a protruding femur or scapula here and there) still clinging to him.
  • In the book Hogfather, the Hogfather first appears in the manifestation of a wild boar. Death and his granddaughter Susan manage to save him, in order that the sun might rise in the morning. Without the Hogfather, according to Death, the Discworld would merely be 'ILLUMINATED BY A BALL OF GLOWING GAS.'
  • The Hogfather is one of a number of beings that hover on the boundary between "god" and "personification", yet probably is best thought of as the latter, since people still receive presents at Hogswatchnight, even if they no longer believe in him. The Hogfather was first mentioned in Reaper Man and dealt with extensively in Hogfather.

These cultural contributions were given a new lease of life by creative artists, authors, poets and songwriters, and it was melded together by the power of secular and commercialized media in record companies, radio stations, television, cinemas and now the internet.
