The Comedy of Errors – review (30/11 2011)

For much of its length I found this production of Shakespeare's early masterpiece slightly strenuous fun as if its director, Dominic Cooke, on his National debut was determined to make use of all the theatre's resources. But in the last quarter-hour his production achieves a magical simplicity that induces a sense of awe and wonder.

Literary fiction and a playwright's secret pen envy (23/11 2011)

• Few references to contemporary drama make it into the nation's supplements. Where exactly does this aversion come from?
• Am I alone in feeling a stab of pique at the way literary fiction hogs the cultural limelight? When my Saturday Review, New Statesman or LRB fall open, it's a rare moment when any plays merit a mention. Indeed, those smart lit-types often go out of their way to deliver brickbats to the world of the stage: I'm still seething at Nicholas Lezard's idle side-swipe during a review of Kenneth Tynan's essays that the "theatre is the most redundant of the major arts".
• Once in a month of Saturdays a more senior voice (a Hare, a Frayn, an Edgar) merits a bit of desultory attention, but largely, print culture passes theatre by.

There’s Been Another Amish Beard Attack — This Time a Son Allegedly Attacked His Dad (12/11 2011)

• Following an odd string of incidents in Jefferson County, Ohio, an elderly Amish man was attacked earlier this week by his own son.
• As you may recall, last month, an unusual pattern began to emerge, as authorities began publicly discussing some disconcerting attacks. Local Amish-men have allegedly been waging a so-called war of sorts against one another.
• These attacks, though, haven’t been your average, run-of-the-mill criminal actions. Rather than physically harming or stealing from their Amish compatriots, some individuals have stormed into homes and viciously cut off the hair and beards of their victims.
