Peace Bridge brings hope to Derry (27/06 2011)
- A new bridge linking divided communities in Londonderry will be a catalyst for change in the city, Martin McGuinness has said Stormont's Deputy First Minister, who hails from the city, joined First Minister Peter Robinson and Irish Republic premier Enda Kenny at the official opening of the 235-metre Peace Bridge across the River Foyle.
- Linking the predominantly Catholic city centre to the largely Protestant Waterside, Mr McGuinness said the foot and cycle bridge was an example of how his home city was changing.

- All crosswords are printerfriendly (pdf)format, and in order to view the documents you will need Adobe Reader, which is free.
- (Under oprydning på EMU Engelsk er jeg faldet over denne side, med kryds-og-tværser, som stadigvæk er relevante).

Reading Strategies for ‘Informational Text’ (17/06 2011)
- While English classes will still include healthy amounts of fiction, the standards say that students should be reading more nonfiction texts as they get older, to prepare them for the kinds of material they will read in college and careers.
- In the fourth grade, students should be reading about the same amount from “literary” and “informational” texts, according to the standards; in the eighth grade, 45 percent should be literary and 55 percent informational, and by 12th grade, the split should be 30/70.

Free Rice (11/06 2011)
- FreeRice er en non-profit website lanceret af FN’s Fødevareprogram (United Nations World Food Programme – WFP).
- FreeRice er kort fortalt et spørgsmålsspil på nettet, der udfordre børn og voksne i emner som geografi, kemi og kunst og samtidig har stort fokus på at forbedre engelsk grammatik og ordforråd.
- FreeRice har to formål: Gøre sprogundervisning tilgængelig for alle.

Fill-In - ‘Macbeth’ for Children (10/06 2011)
- This week, in lieu of lessons, we’re running daily fill-ins.
- In these exercises, which we ordinarily post weekly to help students learn vocabulary and practice reading comprehension, we choose an interesting Times article and drop out certain words or phrases from it, then invite students to fill in the blanks — either from their imaginations, or by choosing from a scrambled list of words and phrases that appear at the bottom of the post.
- Today’s fill-in takes 22 words out of an article about a children’s production of a much-taught play, “Macbeth.”
- Filling in the missing words demands a basic knowledge of the characters and some famous quotes from the play.

Fill-In - D-Day Invasion (08/06 2011)
- This week, in lieu of lessons, we’re running daily fill-ins. In these exercises, which we ordinarily post weekly to help students learn vocabulary and practice reading comprehension, we choose an interesting Times article and drop out certain words or phrases from it, then invite students to fill in the blanks — either from their imaginations, or by choosing from a scrambled list of words and phrases that appear at the bottom of the post.
- To commemorate the fact that the anniversary of D-Day is June 6, today’s fill-in is based on the front-page New York Times article from 1944 about the Normandy invasion, “Hitler’s Sea Wall Is Breached, Invaders Fighting Way Inland; New Allied Landings Are Made.”
- How well do you know your World War II history? Can you supply the 20 missing words in the descriptive passage about the invasion below?

Do You Speak a Second, or Third, Language? (01/06 2011)
A cognitive neuroscientist, Ellen Bialystok has spent almost 40 years learning about how bilingualism sharpens the mind. Her good news: Among other benefits, the regular use of two languages appears to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. Dr. Bialystok, 62, a distinguished research professor of psychology at York University in Toronto, was awarded a $100,000 Killam Prize last year for her contributions to social science.
