Do You Speak a Second, or Third, Language? (01/06 2011)

A cognitive neuroscientist, Ellen Bialystok has spent almost 40 years learning about how bilingualism sharpens the mind. Her good news: Among other benefits, the regular use of two languages appears to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. Dr. Bialystok, 62, a distinguished research professor of psychology at York University in Toronto, was awarded a $100,000 Killam Prize last year for her contributions to social science.

Body of a Nation: Examining the Role of the Mississippi River in American History (18/05 2011)

  • What roles has the Mississippi River played throughout United States history?
  • How has the river been central to struggles to define “America” and “American”?
  • In this lesson, students examine what life was like on the banks of the Mississippi River during pivotal moments in American history. They will then write diary entries from the perspective of riverbank residents during different historical eras.

Ask Teachers About Twitter and Microblogging in the Classroom (14/05 2011)

  • Is the use of Twitter and other microblogging tools in the K-12 classroom a breakthrough in helping all students engage with content,
  • or is it a distraction that undermines traditional forms of discussion?

Teaching ‘The Crucible’ With The New York Times (13/05 2011)

  • Though often considered second best to his “Death of a Salesman” and opening to lukewarm, if not downright hostile, reviews, Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” continues to be mounted and taught worldwide because it speaks to universal fears of social isolation and the unknown – fears especially present in a rapidly changing world, not to mention in the topsy-turvy social order of school.
  • What is “The Crucible” telling audiences now? How have fears about terrorism created modern-day “witches”? What is it about human nature that makes such hysteria possible? How and why does John Proctor embody the American tragic hero? What does it take to do the right thing? Why is doing the right thing so often the hardest thing? What is the true meaning of integrity?

In Service of the Story? Exploring Questions of Truth in Memoir (06/05 2011)

  • What is the role of truth in memoir?
  • Is it O.K. to manipulate facts in the service of conveying a story?
  • In this lesson, students participate in a Socratic seminar to consider questions of truth and fiction in memoir raised by allegations about the veracity of Greg Mortenson’s “Three Cups of Tea.”
  • They also write their own six-word memoirs.

Two of England’s greatest theatre companies cast their lustre on Denmark (05/05 2011)

  • A cast of 22 powerful, energetic and marvellously performing actors from the internationally acclaimed London companies PROPELLER and SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE are coming for the very first time to Kronborg Castle, to delight audiences in the castle courtyard with three fabulous theatre experiences in the open air. World-class comedy and drama that will enthuse audiences of all ages.
  • PROPELLER led by the brilliant director Edward Hall will visit Kronborg with RICHARD III and THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, which are guaranteed to surprise and take the audience by storm.
  • SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE continues the feast at the castle with a raw, elemental and moving new version of HAMLET with the rising star Joshua McGuire in the title role, as the indecisive prince.
  • 3-7 August: The Comedy of Errors og Richard III
  • 10-12 August: Hamlet

Manny in High School: A Slide Show That Tells a Slugger’s Story (04/05 2011)

  • Today we’re testing a new idea, and we’d love your thoughts.
  • Because The New York Times features wonderful multimedia every day, and because we believe that being literate means being able to read images as well as text, we’re considering creating a Multimedia of the Week feature. This feature would highlight Times photographs, interactive graphics or video and be followed by a short list of related questions and activities.
  • Today’s example is from Sara Rimer’s article “Before Manny Became Manny,” about the baseball player Manny Ramirez’s high school years. The story includes a slide show of 12 “then and now” photos of Ramirez that we thought students would enjoy looking at and using as inspiration for their own projects.
