• Når underviserne på de engelsksprogede erhvervsakademi- og professionsbacheloruddannelser skal undervise, er det ikke kun sproget der kan være en barriere.
• Også sammensætningen af studerende med de mange forskellige kulturelle baggrunde er en udfordring.

Nyt site om ny amerikansk litteratur: www.litteraturnyt.dk (28/02 2011)

• Litteraturnyt fra USA er et nyt site, der bringer nyheder om litterære sensationer, nybrud og bestsellere. Her er interviews og reportager med stjerner som Jonathan Franzen, Joyce Carol Oates, Barbara Kingsolver, og Jonathan Safran Foer, men også temaartikler og omtaler af helt nye forfatternavne, der bliver spået en stor fremtid.
• Kort sagt: Det bedste og det nyeste om den enorme og inspirerende amerikanske litterære verden. Lige nu kan man for eksempel læse om det sensationelle fund af 15 nye historier skrevet af den hårdkogte kriminalromans mester, Dashiell Hammett, man kan læse om, hvorfor politisk litteratur har det svært i USA eller fordybe sig i et interview med Joyce Carol Oates om ”Rape – a love story”, der netop er udkommet på dansk.
• Sitet bringer også video-podcasts, som for eksempel med Naja Marie Aidt, der fra Brooklyn giver gode råd til ”litteratursteder i New York”.

‘One in Eight Million’ for English Language Learners (25/02 2011)

• Idea: Using the “One in 8 Million” series, which tells the stories of a varied group of New Yorkers through audio and photography, to help English-language learners improve their listening comprehension and awareness of the multiple styles and nuances of spoken English.
• Why We Chose It: We, too, love “One in 8 Million” and think it has endless possibilities for classrooms. (The series, which ran over the course of 2009 and profiles 54 “ordinary people telling extraordinary stories,” went on to win an Emmy Award.)
• We were delighted to discover that, for Ms. Barikmo and her colleagues, the series has become a touchstone resource that “hooks” their English-language learners with compelling storytelling, yet imparts essential skills.

• Bladet er i dag udkommet elektronisk, og det kan læses af Engelsklærerforeningens medlemmer på hjemmesiden med brug af korrekt brugernavn og password.
• Bladet vil blive bragt ud med postvæsenet i den kommende uge.

A Tale of One City: Examining Urban Decay and Renewal (16/02 2011)

• Why do some cities drastically lose their industries and populations?
• How can cities that have fallen on hard times be revitalized?
• In this lesson, students examine the plight and recent revitalization efforts of Braddock, Pa., and explore various urban renewal strategies implemented around the United States.
• They then apply their learning to their own communities or put them into historical context.

Preparing for the Future: Improving College Readiness (12/02 2011)

• This week’s education news includes the finding that fewer than half of New York City’s high school graduates were prepared for college or a well-paying career.
• Statewide, 77 percent of students graduate, but correlating state standards to college performance reveals that far fewer of those graduates are equipped for success in college or the workplace.
• And the issue is a national one. President Obama has made reducing the drop-out rate and increasing college and career preparedness a priority for his administration.
• Are your students on the path to college readiness?

Passion Prompts: Sentence Starters for Writing About Relationships (11/02 2011)

• Love may be a many splendored thing, but it’s not always easy to write about.
• In honor of Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d offer some sentence starters to help. Though most of the sentences we’ve chosen are opening lines from New York Times essays or articles about romantic love, you can use them as jumping-off points to write about any kind of relationship.
• So whether you’re describing fondness for a friend, sentiment for a sweetheart, bereavement for a breakup, partiality for a pet, or even a soft spot for your skateboard, choose from among the 21 lines below to get started.
• At the end of the post we offer additional ideas for using these sentence starters in the classroom, as well as links to more Valentine’s resources, including our Valentine’s Day Across the Curriculum collection.

The 21 Century is the Age of Stupid (10/02 2011)

• British Council, Studenterforening and 10:10 Danmark will tell you how at Studenterhuset on 24 February 2011.
• The blockbuster climate film Age of Stupid will be screened at 17.00, and afterwards there will be time for participants to learn more and enjoy a sandwich and a drink.

Revolt! Comparing Historical Revolutions (09/02 2011)

• What is a revolution, and how is it different from other kinds of revolts and conflicts?
• How do the protests in Egypt compare with historical revolutions?
• In this lesson, students work together to define revolution and engage in research to help them create infographics that represent various historical revolutions around the world.

• På webstedet er der indhold til 0.-3. klasse, 4.-6. klasse, 7.-10. klasse, ungdomsuddannelser og til lærere og forældre.
• På forsiden er der aktuelt indhold fx. Video: State of the Union 2011.

Klimaundervisning i sprogfagene (01/02 2011)

• Udviklingsprojektet ”Klimaundervisning i sprogfagene” er et samarbejdsprojekt mellem Institut for Engelsk, Germansk og Romansk (Københavns Universitet), forskellige gymnasieskoler og et VUC (støttet af UVM).
• Fagene Dansk, Tysk, Engelsk og Fransk har været involveret.
• Projektet er støttet af undervisningsministeriet og beskæftiger sig med den humanistiske og ikke mindst fremmedssprogspædagogiske vinkel på klimaproblematikken.
